Scandinavian Folklore: Mara.👻

The Mara is a female spirit like being from Scandinavian mythology.

One of the earliest mention and possibly the original origins of the tale comes from the Norse Ynglinga saga, a 13th century saga written by Snorri Sturlson, an Icelandic poet.

In the saga King Vanlandi Sveigoisson of Uppsala is killed by a mara which is conjured by the Finnish sorceress Huld, hired by the king’s abandoned wife.

.....

–Ynglinga Saga, Verse 16..

“Driva bribed the witch-

wife Huld, either that she should bewitch Vanlande to return to

Finland, or kill him. When this witch-work was going on Vanlande

was at Upsal, and a great desire came over him to go to Finland;

but his friends and counsellors advised him against it, and said

the witchcraft of the Finn people showed itself in this desire of

his to go there. He then became very drowsy, and laid himself

down to sleep; but when he had slept but a little while he cried

out, saying that the Mara was treading upon him. His men

hastened to him to help him; but when they took hold of his head

she trod on his legs, and when they laid hold of his legs she

pressed upon his head; and it was his death. The Swedes took his

body and burnt it at a river called Skytaa, where a standing

stone was raised over him.”
....
....... .

........
In Polish folklore the mara is described as a soul of a living person who leaves their body at night (astral projection) and are seen by others in the form of wisps of hair or moths.

In Czech lore there are stories  of a “night-butterfly,” also thought to be linked to the mara legend.

In Russian folklore she's  invisible but with the ability to also take the form of a woman with long hair. Other mentions of mara in Slavic folklore include descriptions of the her as a succubus-like creature that invades men’s dreams and lead them to their doom (Croatia) and as a spirit who enters through the keyhole and strangles you while you sleep (Serbia).

In Turkey, the mara is called the Karabasan which translates to “ominous-presser.”

,.....

In the  Icelandic Vatnsdæla saga as a spirit connected to the fate of the person it is attached to and in the Eyrbyggja saga (also Icelandic in origin) where the sorceress Geirrid is said to assume the shape of a marlíðendr or “night-rider.”

In Germany there are records of charms and prayers to ward off the mara, such as the below:

Here I am lying down to sleep;

No night-mare shall plague me

until they have swum through all the waters

that flow upon the earth,

and counted all stars

that appear in the skies.

Thus help me God Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen!..

,..... .

The legend of the mara is also connected to the legend of the old had or night hag, a story used in many cultures to explain sleep paralysis.

The first definition of sleep paralysis appears in Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary under the term “nightmare”:

Nightmare n.s. [night, and according to Temple, mara, a spirit that in the heathen mythology, was related to torment to suffocate sleepers.] A morbid oppression in the night, resembling the pressure of weight upon the chest.

                        Old Hag, Night Hag.

.....

......

Other versions from around the world.
..

In Japan it is referred to as kanashibari, which translates as “to bind” or “to tie.”
In Mongolia sleep paralysis is called khar darakh, which translates to “to be pressed by the Black.”

Thai belief describes sleep paralysis as being caused by a ghost called Phi Am.

Newfoundland and parts of the southern United States where the hag leaves her body and sits on the chest of the victim.

In Arab cultures it is referred to as Ja-thoom which means “what sits heavily on something.” It is believed sleep paralysis can be prevented by reading the Throne verse of the Quran.
......

The origins of the name comes from the Nordic word for nightmare (the Norwegian word for nightmare is mareitt, the Icelandic name is martroo, and the Swedish word  is mardrom). Mareitt and martroo roughly translate as “mare-ride”, referencing the original use of the term, while mardrom translates as “mare-dream.”

The Russian Mermaid ...
She is as dangerous as she is beautiful

Rusalka or Pusalka is commonly described as  a water nymph..

The Rusalka is a female spirit in Russian / Slavic folklore and their  equivalent of a mermaid. though she has two leg's insted of a finned tail and in some versions can walk on land and even climb tree's..

She has different names in various cultures: rusalka (in East Slavic cultures) vila (Czech, Slovak), wiła (Polish).

According to most accounts the rusalki were a type of fish-women, who lived at the bottom of rivers and lake's.

In some legends she would leave her watery home late at night together with other Rusalki she would walk out to the bank and dance in meadows. If they saw handsome men, they would  enchant them with songs and dancing, mesmerize them, then lead them away to the river and to their inevitable  death.

=========================
A Rusalka most often  appears as a beautiful young women, she will site by the shore of a lake usually coming her hair or sometimes singing this is done as a means to lure in her prey..

In some version's she is a type of water spirit in other's she is a young woman that was ether murdered by her lover of  who committed suicide by drowning due to an unhappy marriage or who were violently drowned against their will (especially after becoming pregnant with unwanted children), and now  must live out their time on Earth as rusalki.

However,in some  Slavic versions  not all rusalki encounters were linked with death from water It is accounted by most stories that the soul  of a young woman who had died in or near a river or a lake would come back to haunt that waterway.

Though this version of a  rusalka is not invariably malevolent or evil, and would be allowed to rest in peace if her death is avenged.
========
In some versions she has green sea week like hair....

================

Her main purpose is, however, to lure young men, seduced by either her looks or her voice, (Similar  to a Siren or a Succubus)  into the depths of the waterways where she would entangle their feet with her long hair and submerge them. Her body would instantly become very slippery and not allow the victim to cling on to her in order to reach the surface.

                                            Russian mermaids

 ======
She would then wait until the victim had drowned, or, on some occasions, tickle them to death, as she laughed.

 It is also believed, by a few accounts, that rusalki can change their appearance to match the tastes of men they are about to seduce  although a rusalka is generally considered to represent universal beauty, therefore is highly feared yet respected in Slavic culture.

Celebrations: Rusalka Week..
=======================

The Rusalki  are believed to be at their most dangerous during the Rusalka Week in early June. At this time, they were supposed to have left their watery depths in order to swing on branches of birch and willow trees by night. Swimming during this week was strictly forbidden, lest these  mermaids would drag a swimmer down to the river bed.

Month of Monster Girls; The Yuki-Onna

 Month of Monster Girls; The Yuki-Onna

Its officially autumn now and there's a chill in the air,
So who better to start my month of monster girls post with then a this stone cold beauty --

The Yuki Onna.

The  Yuki onna is one cool yokai, but she dose have a somewhat chilly disposition and she's been known to give people the cold shoulder from time to time....lol sorry, .... i'll cool it with the ice jokes . :)
=========

Almighty  on to the info.....
......................................................................
The snow woman was ether a woman that died in the cold from a broken heart, now her hart is cold as ice and she freezes others to death.or She was never human to begin with and was a supernatural being from the star.

the Yuki-onna, being a snow woman is of course associated  with winter, snowstorms and the cold, most people think she is the spirit of someone who died in the cold.

She has snow white skin that's is cold to the touch and is most often seen in snowy mountain areas but can appear any place cold enough.

Some believe this yokai was never human to begin with and is just an evil spirit that can manipulate the cold or possibly even an elemental spirit.

In older story's she was almost always viewed as evil, however in more modern versions she is much kinder.

======================

Myths and legends of the snow woman.

The Yuki Onna Or Snow Woman is a yokai from Japanese mythology.

Like many yokai, she can appear solid or in a more  ghost like form. Sometimes she has visible feet other times she is far more ghost like
with no feet or an almost translucent lower half.

She sometimes wears a white kimono, though other legends say she appears  nude, with only her face and hair standing out against the snow.

                                                           Yuki Onna Fan Art : Nioh

-----------------

She's most often described as a beautiful young woman, with snow white pale skin, blue lips and  icy blue eyes (sometimes white) that can strike fear into any lost traveling unlucky enough to meet her gaze.

In other descriptions she is said to have long black hair, blue or grayish lips and  inhumanly pale or even slightly transparent skin that makes her blend into the snow around her.

she's also believed to have the ability to transform into a cloud of mist or snow when threatened or when just trying to hide and wait for her target..

In some tales she walks just like you or me, in other versions she is said to float across the top of the snow, in both versions she moves along the top of the snow without leaving any footprints behind her.
==============================

                                                 --------------------------------------------------

=======================yuki onna killing her victims================

There are  some stories where the Yuki-onna will appear to travelers trapped in snowstorms, and uses her icy cold breath to leave them as frost-coated corpses.

She will also lead travelers off the path and into the forest to die of exposure without killing them herself.

She has even been known to appear on a deserted road in front of a traveler holding a child. She will then ask the traveler to hold the baby for a moment however once the unlucky person takes the "child" from her, they are instantly frozen where  they stand.

Parents searching for lost children are especially vulnerable to this trick.

==========

Another odd trait is that she sometimes  seems to be somewhat vampire like, requiring an invitation into a home or cabin etc, before she can enter.

but there are versions that claim she can invade homes at will, with or without permission, she would simply blow in the door with a strong gust of wind to kill  whomever is in there  sleeping.

====================
The reason for her murderous attacks varies from one version of the myth to the next.
Sometimes she just gets satisfaction watching her victim die. Other times, she will drain her victims' blood or "life force." (again vampire like)

But she has also been described as a succubus-like creature preying on weak-willed men to drain their life force or freeze  them during sex or sometimes even just a kiss.

She dose not always kill her victims though, sometimes she will let them go, and from time to time  she even ends up marrying them.

                                                         =============
                                   ---Succubus---
                                       ========

Succubus or (Sucubi) are powerful female demons commonly associated with sexual desire..

The Succubus is referenced in midevil European folklore and ancient  Jewish mythology.

In a biblical account Lilith the first woman and  Adam's fist wife turned into a demon (Succubus) after leaving the Garden of Eden., and later became the queen of Demons and one of the for Queens of the succubus.

In the Kabbalah  and the school of Rashla, the original three queens of the demons, Eisheth Zenumin, Naamah, and Agrat bat Mahlat. and all their cohorts give birth to children, except Lilith  According to other myth's, the children of Lilith are called Lilin.

The four queens of the Succubus are ...   Lilith, Eisheth Zenumin, Agrat bat Mahlat, and Naamah.

The word succubus comes from Latin...succuba "paramour"; from succubare "to lie beneath" (sub- "under" and cubare "to lie") used to describe this female entity's implied sexual position relative to the male sleeper's position.

The word succubus originates from the late 14th century (late 1,300's).

Succubi are female daemon's that appeal to a man's sexual fantasy's/dreams  they can take on various sexually appealing forms.

From long haired, to lithe and winged.

Succubi appear in whatever form is most pleasing to her intended victim.

Though they commonly appearing as scantily clad, shapely, winged demons.

===============

In some legends a Succubi true form were described as being disfigured and monsters, with multiple of rows of teeth, 3 sets of breasts and razor sharp  talon-like nails.

Though the  descriptions vary from legend to legend.

 ----------------

                                            Myth's regarding Succubi date back century's..

Victims of 'Succubi' attack's described their visits as a feeling of someone sitting on my chest or pelvic area.' and when they wake up , they feel drained, unable to move and petrified, though having had a wonderful and erotic dream the night before.

This is likely a form of sleep paralysis..

In medevil time's  succubi encounters were sometimes used  as an attempt to explain why some people had birth defects or as an excuses for  adultery.

 Succubus are said to  use there supernatural powers to seduce a man and steal his semen.
In some versions of the legend Succubus would later  transform into an Incubus and seduce a woman.
After a woman has an encounter with  an incubus the baby might have some form  deformities or other supposed marks of the demons influence.

Characteristically, a Succubi is a psychic, or 'manipulative' demon, using manipulation and compelling psychic abilities to overcome and seduce its prey, feeding from the victims soul and returning night after night until the soul is entirely consumed, resulting in the mans death..

The Sirens of Greek mythology are similar in nature to a succubus, in that they use there attractive form's and mesmerizing song's to lure men to there death's..

Demons of Love: the Kumiho / Gumiho..The Korean Fox Girl

-----------------------------------------
(Next week's post will be the Succubus, Happy early Valentines Day................
-----------------------------------

                                           Ahri League of Legends  by  ASTELTAINN

A kumiho (gumiho)
is a type of fox spirit in Korean mythology

=======================================

The Kumiho like the Japanese Kitsune is a supernatural fox creature ..

Fox spirits are popular east Asian figures Korea, Japan and China  all have ancient myths and folklore regarding them.

According to legend a  fox that manages to live a thousand years turns into a kumiho, like other fox legend's the kumiho can transform at will usually taking on a female form they  will then  set out to seduce men, and according to some versions on the myth eat there heart or liver.

===============
Fox spirits are in a way similar to the Succubus in that they take the form of seductive young woman....
===================

         Shin Min-ah plays a fox girl in the South Korean comedy romance My Girlfriend is a Gumiho  ..

===================

The encyclopedic Compendium of Korean Oral Literature contains a lot of story's regarding the gumiho..
=========================

Even though the Gumiho has the power to transform into a human (Most often a beautiful woman). They  still something retain one or more fox-like features.

For example  in her human form she may still have , a fox like face or  pointed ears hidden under her hair, or maybe even  nine fox tails that only become visible when her  wedding dress is removed. Though able to change between human and fox forms, a Kumiho is very cautions and  guards her true identity.

 It is believed that a  kumiho can transform into the identical likeness of a  bride at a wedding and is only discovered when her clothes are removed on the honeymoon and her fox tail is reveled.

Bakh Mun-su and the Kumiho (박문수와 구미호) records an encounter that Pak Munsu has with a girl, living alone in the woods, that has a fox-like appearance. In The Maiden who Discovered a Kumiho through a Chinese Poem (한시로 구미호를 알아낸 처녀), the kumiho is ultimately revealed when a hunting dog catches the scent of a fox and attacks the girl. Although they have the ability to change physical forms, a kumiho dose not change there true nature.
 However it is believed that kumiho how  abstains from killing and eating humans for a thousand days, can become human.

=========================

Nine tailed fox myths and legends seem to have Originated  in China  centuries ago and later being introduced to introduced to both Korean and Japanese mythology.

The  Korean Kumiho / Gumiho  shares many similarities to the Chinese Huli Jing and the Japanese Kitsune  an old Chinese text, claims a fox with nine tails lives in an area called Qingqiu (靑丘).

As the kumiho and other versions of the nine-tailed fox myths originated from China, they all have a similar concept.

 The all describe  fox spirits as being the result of extreme longevity or the accumulation of energy.

Usually foxes who have lived for at least thousand years, will gain  the power of shape-shifting.

However there is still some differences between the legends , while the Chinese  huli jing and the Japanese  kitsune are usually said to have a more ambiguous moral compasses, possibly good or evil, the kumiho is almost always treated as a malevolent figure who feasts on human energy and sometimes there flesh.

                                    Ahri League of Legends  found on Wallpaper HD

======

It is unclear at which point in time Koreans began viewing the kumiho as a evil creature, since many ancient texts from China mention a more benevolent kumiho helping humans (and even make mentions of bad humans tricking kind but naïve kumiho).

In later text, kumiho were often depicted as bloodthirsty half-fox, half-human creatures that wandered cemeteries at night, digging human hearts out from graves simelar to Ghoules.
 ---------------

The fairy tale The Fox Sister A fox spirit preying on a family for their livers.

 However, according to Gyuwon Sahwa, kumiho is described as an auspicious fox spirit with a book in its mouth. Considering the text is thought to be written in 1675, some speculate that the modern violent image of kumiho is influenced during the Japanese occupation in Korea.

Nevertheless, foxes often contained a negative image during the Koryo Dynasty  (Shin Don)  was described as an old fox spirit due to his love for women and drinks despite his being a buddhist monk), suggesting two different views could have co-existed in ancient Korea.

 ===============
The  Gyuwon Sahwa  was written in 1675, and describes ancient Korean  history including the creation of the universe. Today, its principal value is generally seen in its role as a historical story reflecting the consciousness of the period, rather than as a historical record. Similar contents are also found in Hwandan Gogi, which is generally believed to have been influenced by the Gyuwon Sahwa
 The Gyuwon Sahwa is now kept at the National Library or Korea.

 ---------------------------------

The most distinctive feature that separates the kumiho from its two counterparts is the existence of a 'yeowoo guseul' (여우구슬, literally meaning fox marble/bead) which is said to consist of knowledge.

According to Korean mythology, the yeowoo guseul provides power to the kumiho and knowledge (and intelligence) to people if they can steal and swallow one.

The kumiho can absorb humans' energy with it. The method of absorbing energy with the "yeowoo guseul" resembles a "deep kiss" (a kiss using the  tongue). The kumiho sends the yeowoo guseul into people's mouths and then retakes it with their tongues. If that person swallows the yeowoo guseul, however, and then observes "sky, land, and people", each observation gives the observer preternatural knowledge. But the person fails to watch the "sky" in most tales, so they get a special ability but not the most important one.
 .................................................

Just like Vampire's, Witches and Werewolf story's in Western folklore, there are always going to by slightly different variations on the myth depending on the person  recounting them.

In one older version of this  myth, says  that with enough will, a kumiho could ascend from its yokai  form and  become permanently human there by lose its evil characteristics.

Explanations of how this could be possible vary, but sometimes include aspects such as refraining from killing or tasting meat for a thousand days, or obtaining a cintamani   and making sure that the Yeoiju saw the full moon  at least every month during the ordeal. Unlike Yeoiju-wielding dragon  , kumiho were not believed to be capable of optioning omnipotence or creation at will, since they were lesser creatures.

In some legends she is very friendly if approached properly and may even offer advice such as where the best fishing location or hunting spot can be found.

In others she is dangerous, often luring in  young men and killing them.

In most versions she has look's just like any normal human woman, the only way to tell something is different is her  tail usually said to resemble a cow's tail and sometimes a fox's.. that can be seen stinking out from the bottom of her dress.

 In Norway, she has a cow's tail, in Sweden she usually doesn't have a tail and in other story's she has  a fox tail. just depends on what version of the myth you hear.....

There is a similar creature in  Germany called a holda

Being a forest dwelling creature the hulder is also  associated with hunting; if she take's a liking to a huntsman she may blow down the barrel of his  rifle, causing it never to miss a shot.

Other's she doesn't not like are often loose there minds and spend the rest of there life as a lunatic, if she doesn't just kill them.

..........................

 In most versions of the huldra legend she is a seductress.
 ---

The Huldra will lure men into the forest to have sexual intercourse with her, she will reward those who satisfy her and she will kill those who don't.

The Norway the huldra  is  somewhat less violent most of the time and may just kidnap a man or lure him into the other realm of the Hilda Folk / Hidden Folk.

She has also been know kidnap human infants and replaces them with her own huldrebarn (huldre children similar to fairy changelings).

Sometimes the relationship between the huldra and the man she charmed would result in a child, being presented to the unknowing father.

In some cases, she forces him to marry her afterwards.

 ----------------------
In Norway back in the1980's an elderly man from Valdres claimed he had a child with the hulderpeople on Norwegian radio.
--------------------------------

Sometimes she marries a local village man, but when this happens, the glamour leaves her when the priest lays his hand on her, or when she enters the church reviling to all preset that she was not human.

Some tales  leave out this that part, and only relate how her  marriage to a Christian man will cause her to lose her tail, but not her looks, and let the couple live happily ever after.

However if she is treated badly it will not end will for the abuser!

Haldra's are very strong !

She can straighten  out a horseshoe with her bare hands, sometimes while it is still glowing hot from the forge or even lift up a tree trunk.
 -----------------

If betrayed, a hulder will punish a man.

In one old tale  from Sigdal, A man betrayed her trust and she avenged her pride on a young braggart she had sworn to marry, on the promise that he would not tell anybody of her. The boy instead bragged about his bride for a year, and when they met again, she beat him around the ears with her cow's tail. He lost his hearing and his wits for the rest of his life.

 ============

                                             Related image

The hulder were said to be kind to charcoal burners, watching their charcoal kilns while they rested.

Knowing that she would wake them if there were any problems, they were able to sleep, and in exchange they left provisions for her.

A boy in Tiveden went fishing, but he had no luck. Then he met a beautiful lady, and she was so stunning that he felt he had to catch his breath. But, then he realized who she was, because he could see a fox's tail sticking out below the skirt. As he knew that it was forbidden to comment on the tail to the lady of the forest, if it were not done in the most polite manner, he bowed deeply and said with his softest voice, "Milady, I see that your petticoat shows below your skirt". The lady thanked him gracefully and hid her tail under her skirt, telling the boy to fish on the other side of the lake. That day, the boy had great luck with his fishing and he caught a fish every time he threw out the line. This was the hulder's recognition of his politeness -----
 =-----------------
 Norway and other area's of Scandinavia have many famous places named after the Huldra.

Ulddaidvárri in Kvænangen, Troms (Norway) means "Mountain of the Hulders" in North Sámi.

The Baobhan Sith, pronounced baa’van see, also also known as the White Women of the Scottish Highlands or simply the Fairy Woman.

The Baobhan Sith is most often  depicted as  a beautiful young woman,

They are believed to be a type of fairy, though they share similarities to Succubus and Vampire's

They can be found lurking in the Highlands, waiting to seduce young travelers and drink their blood.

Thought to be fairies. though some believe them to be a sub spices of Succubus or a type of lesser vampire... are a particularly dangerous type of vampire-spirits from the folklore of the Scottish Highlands like  the Leanan Sídhes, the Boabhan Siths are considered female but are usually temptresses who use their beauty to lure men into dance before brutally killing them

There mane concern is feeding - they will luring young hunters in by inviting them to dance until the hunter's are too tired too fight back or  overpower the Baobahn Sith.

They would then feed on their helpless victims, draining them dry of blood.

The baobhan sith most often appears as a beautiful young woman wearing a long green dress..

She has deer hooves insted of normal human feet..

The long dress is used to conceals her  hooveed legs ..

One famous legend state's that there were four men who went hunting and took shelter for the night in an old cabin.

One of the men supplied vocal music while the others began dancing.

The men wished there were woman present  to dance with, and soon after that four women entered the hut.

Three of them danced while the fourth sat beside as the vocalist.

He then noticed drops of blood falling from his companions and fled from the hut, taking refuge among the horses. His blood thusty  guests chased him but were unable to catch him, and when daylight came the woman all disappeared.

Later the man went back inside and found all three of his friends dead and  completely drained of blood.

The  baobhan sith was unable to catch the fourth man because liker other fairy's she has a weakness to iron., (iron being a traditional fairy  vulnerability.)

In a similar tale one of the men noticed that the women had deer hooves instead of feet and fled from them. He returned the next morning to find that the other hunters had their "throats cut and chests laid open".

In a third story the hunters took refuge in a cave.

Each of the men said he wished his own sweetheart were there that night, but one of them, named Macphee, who was accompanied by his black dog, said he preferred his wife to remain at home.

 At that moment a group of young women entered the cave, and the men who had wished for their sweethearts were killed. Macphee was protected by his dog who drove the women from the cave.

One recurring motif in these stories is that the baobhan sith appear almost immediately after the hunters express their desire for female companionship.

This is connected with a traditional Scottish belief that if one were to make a wish at night without also invoking God's protection, then that wish would be granted in some terrible manner..
