The Hopkinsville Goblin's

 

Just over 70 years ago,a strange possibly extraterrestrial encounter took place on a rural farm in Kentucky.

On the night of August 21, 1955, five adults and seven children arrived at the Hopkinsville police station claiming that small goblin like alien creatures from a spaceship had been attacking their farmhouse and that they had been holding them off with gunfire "for nearly four hours". Two of the adults, Elmer Sutton and Billy Ray Taylor, claimed they had been shooting at a few short, dark figures who repeatedly popped up at the doorway or peered into windows.

 The Kentucky New Era, the first paper to report the incident, increased the number of creatures to "12 to 15," and this continues to be the number most often reported.

The report of gunfire and unknown creatures triggered a large police response that included local city police officers,  state troopers, deputy sheriffs, and even four military police officers from the nearby United States Army Fort Campbell  to the Sutton farmhouse located near the town of Kelly in Christian County.

There were dozens of eyewitnesses to the incidents, which included two families present at the farmhouse and others in the area; other civilians, some of whom had no connection to the families and even one in another state. the witnesses also included several local policemen and a state trooper who saw and heard strange phenomena including unexplained lights in the night sky and noises the same night.

The family present in the farmhouse all claimed that they were terrorized by several creatures similar to gremlins, which have since often been referred to as the "Hopkinsville Goblins" in popular culture. 

The possibly otherworldly creatures were described as about three feet tall, with upright pointed ears, thin limbs (the beings' legs were said to be almost non functional or devolved, even in a state of atrophy), long arms and claw-like hands or talons. The creatures were either silvery in color, or wearing something metallic. ( Skeptics claim the witnesses were seeing large owls and simply mistook them for something else)

Their movements on occasion seemed to defy gravity with them floating above the ground and appearing in high up places, and they "walked" with a swaying motion as though wading through water. Although the creatures never entered the house, they would pop up at windows and at the doorway, waking the children in the house up to a hysterical frenzy. The families fled the farmhouse in the middle of the night to the local police station and sheriff Russell Greenwell noted that they were visibly shaken. 

The families returned to the farmhouse with Sheriff Greenwell and several officers, yet the occurrences continued. Police saw evidence of the struggle and damage to the house, as well as seeing strange lights and hearing noises themselves. The witnesses additionally claimed to have used firearms to shoot at the creatures, with little or no effect, and the house and surrounding grounds were extensively damaged during the incident. There are no known photographs of a Hopkinsville Goblin.

These small gnome like creatures can be found in  Scandinavia, Germany, England and a few other Locations including  America and Canada.

In Chicago there is a small demon, leprechaun or gnome like being called The Nain seeing him I'd said to be a bad omen followed be something bad happening to the the city.   ( Fire, sickness economic hardship ect ) He is most often described as childlike in hight with red or black fur boots and  "blazing red eyes and rotten teeth

 The word Lutin is usually translated to English as: brownie, elf, fairy, gnome, goblin, imp, jetin ..... pretty much any small figure depending on the region he is spotted in.

 He  can take several different forms  dogs cats other small animals or even a horse with a saddle ready to ride,  in this shape he's called Le Cheval Bayard. Or he could just stay completely invisible.

In  Quebec Canada he's considered a type of  spirit that can take  the form of either pets (usually a dogs or rabbit) or other animals from the region. It's believed that an animal with all white fur could be a Lutin especially a  white cat, though any  animal that lives in or near a home could  be a Lutin in disguise.  

The are essentially House spirits, similar to a Nisse or a Kikimora , they can be either   good or bad, the good ones use their  powers in a verity of ways ranging from  controlling the weather, to shaving the beard of the master of the house before he wakes up  Sundays.

Bad of simply offended ones  may harass the home owner with  minor troubles, like dulling  a  scythe blade or filling someone's shoes with pebbles. 

Good or bad they all seem to absolutely hate salt and will go out of their way to avoid crossing it when spilled on the ground.

 They also occasionally seem to enjoy tangling human or horses' hair into elf-locks.

It Lapland mythology, they are helpers to Pêre Noêl (Santa🎅) Basically elves.

One of the older Lutin references can be found in the French fairy tale "Le Prince Lutin", written in 1697 by Marie Catherine d'Aulnoyshe    gives a description of their powers........

 "air, water and terrestrial lutin": "You are invisible when you like it; you cross in one moment the vast space of the universe; you rise without having wings; you go through the ground without dying; you penetrate the abysses of the sea without drowning; you enter everywhere, though the windows and the doors are closed; and, when you decide to, you can let yourself be seen in your natural form.

 In this story a red hat with two feathers makes them  invisible to everyone.

Kallikantzaroi, Christmas Goblin's 🎄🇬🇷

 

The Kallikantzaroi is a goblin like creature from Greek folklore.

 They live underground most of the year and spend their time sawing away at the world tree trying to bring it down and the world with it,  only coming out during the twelve days of Christmas, from December 25th to January 6th. 

They are small creatures  most often described as goblins or tiny demons with tails,  long, shaggy hair and hooves for feet.

 Despite their monstrous appearance, they are mostly prankster not good, but not entirely evil, however their mischievous behavior during the Christmas season can be troublesome similar to the pranks played by the Yule lad's.

 

 They're pranks usually involve stealing peoples belongings, and messing with  food. 

 There are several customs and rituals to keep them away,  including leaving a fire burning in the hearth throughout the night to prevent the Kallikantzaroi from entering through the chimney,  hanging holly and garlic, and placing a colander on the doorstep are some methods  believed to keep the Kallikantzaroi at bay.

 

They're pranks will continue until the Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated on January 6th. As the waters are blessed during the Epiphany service, the Christmas goblins return to they're underground home only to resurface the following year when the holiday season arrives once again.
