Irish Folkore and Fay: The Pooka

 

 



 

 

The pooka (or púca) are  some of the most feared shapshifting  creatures in Irish mythology.  

 

They were believed to bring either good or bad luck to those who see them and were especially feared around times of harvest. As a good or bad harvest could mean the difference between life and death during a hard winter.

They often take the form of a wild dog, with red sulfurous eyes, but could also take the form of a goblin or human with animal features. According to Celtic mythology, they are often written as evil and devilish.

However, there are also tales of them warning humans of accidents or being called on for protection.

 

 A similar fairy entity appears in the mythology of Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Channel Islands.


Often thought of as an animal spirit, some accounts believe it gets its name from Poc, meaning he-goat in Irish. In fact, Pooka is a changeling and can take an animal or human form; like a horse, donkey, cat, dog, bull, young man, or even a voluptuous young woman. The animal Pooka is usually jet black with fiery golden or red eyes. Some associate it with the devil!

 

 

They live deep in the mountains and hillside. Depending on the part of Ireland your in, Pooka was  either helpful or harmful. It's been known to help farmers for example, but it can also wreak havoc in a farm.

Though in general an encounter with y a poika usually seen as a bad oman. 


Poika is know for it's intelligence and deceptive nature and it's ability to lie convincingly to it's target. It is also considered a fertility spirit in some regions since it has the power to create or destroy.  Another one of it's abilities is  human speech, it is a gifted prophesier.

 

 November is the month of Pooka. In Ireland essentially at Halloween,  children went out dressed as pooka and collected treats or played pranks(early truck or treating) but others stayed indoors, fearful of stories they had heard of what Pooka did to children. The Pooka is considered a  bogeyman  in some places throughout Ireland.

 

 This  fay  is also  documented in the classic literature of Ireland and Britain. Irish poet and playwright W. B. Yeats depicts Pooka as an eagle, while Irish novelist and playwright Brian O’Nolan, who wrote under the pseudonym Flann O’Brien, was also so inspired. O’Brien’s masterpiece, At Swim-Two-Birds, features a character called Pooka MacPhillemey, a “member of devil class”. In William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Puck is a mischievous and quick-witted sprite responsible for setting many of the play’s events in motion through his magic.

Often appearing as a horse, Pooka sometimes gallops across the countryside knocking down fences and gates and destroying crops. In this form, he likes to take a rider, usually a drunkard, on a wild ride all night and shake him off in the early morning. This person, already heavily inebriated, is also under the spell  and has no recollection of what happened usually. This often accounts for why some people who, having gotten very drunk, report that they have no idea what happened the previous night.

 


 

 The only man to ever successfully ride a Pooka was High King of Ireland and founder of O’Brien dynasty, Brian Boruma Mac Cennetig (941-1014), or more commonly known as Brian Boru. Brian managed to control the magic of the creature by using a special bridle that used three hairs of Pooka’s tail. Brian’s physical prowess meant he was able to stay on its back until it was exhausted Pooka then surrendered to Brian.

 

 

 

The king forced it to agree to two promises. First, it no longer tormented Christian people and ruined their property, and second it would never again attack an Irishman, except those who were drunk or were abroad with evil intent. Although Pooka agreed, it appears to have forgotten its promises over the years. 

There have been hundreds of pooka sightings all over the country throughout the centuries but the most famous story is an animal spirit that gave its name to Poulaphuca (Hole of Pooka) at the boundary of River Liffey between counties Kildare and Wicklow.




 Now a site of a hydroelectric power station, where the river flows through a narrow gorge before plunging 150 feet (46 meters) in three stages. Under the second drop there is a pool, and this is called Hole of Pooka. Irish author Padraig O’Farrell (1932-2004) tells a story which was inspired by the written account of an anonymous Kildare man. The writer also has an interesting postscript at the end:

 

   In November 1813, Kildare Hunt known as Killing Kildares set out. Having indulged in traditional stirrup cup at Tipper crossroads, near Naas, hunt failed to raise a fox until it was approaching Tipperkevin, north of Ballymore Eustace, county Kildare. Here a large fox appeared and led a course towards Liffey. Simultaneously, an un-mounted black horse appeared, that did not belong to any of riders. It was Pooka!

"The terrain was difficult and fox ran fast, so that near Liffey, only one of members of hunt, a man named Grennan, and horse, who was really Pooka, remained with pack. The gorge was in full spate but hounds were gaining on their quarry and started to pick their way across rocks. Seeing danger, Grennan attempted to recall hounds, but Pooka ahead of them was tempting them onwards. The fox headed for ledge on narrow part of gorge then, seeing Pooka’s red eyes spitting fire, fox jumped. It missed ledge, falling into turbulent waters below. The Pooka easily leaped across gorge, disappearing into woodlands, but pack of hounds hard on scent of fox went headlong into pool.

 "Looking down, Grennan saw fox and hounds trying desperately to swim to safety through swirling swell; other hounds dashed against rocks were yelping in pain and dying. He wept as most of pack went under. Suddenly his sorrow give way to terror, he heard a diabolical neighing, like an animal laughing – from woods opposite. Grennan knew then it was Pooka."

The writer of the original story describes how in the 1930s, as he stood above the valleys of Liffey and King’s River, a sudden sadness came over him and he wept at the sight of so many humble homes that would soon be submerged forever by Blessington Lakes, created to supply water for a power station at Poulaphuca.

Between 1938 and 1940 seventy-six houses were demolished and bridges at Humphreystown, Baltyboys, and Burgage were blown up before the entire valley was flooded for the hydroelectric power station. A Protestant church, St. Mark’s, built in 1682 was also submerged. To this day there have been many claims of people hearing bells tolling beneath the waters of lakes.

The Beast of Roanoke.

 





The Roanoke Werewolf

Does a werewolf hunt the forests of the Roanoke ? 


There have been  sightings of a wolf like creature in and around the area for decades.


One of the most recent and unnerving encounters happened to a couple on vacation in rural North Carolina.


The couple, David and Lisa, were camping near Roanoke when they encountered a creature they believe to be the Roanoke Werewolf.

David went out to investigate noises around the camper when he spotted what he initially thought was a large dog, only to see the creature stand up on its hind lag's accompanied by an odd popping sound of the joints shifting as it stood.

 David, armed with a .357 magnum, claims to have shot the roughly 7-foot tall glowing eyes beast at close range, hitting it in  the shoulder only for the bullets to barely faze it seemingly annoying it more the hurting it



However the arrival of a second creature in the woodline growing at them quickly convinced the couple it was time to go. 


They fled to their vehicle and sped away, later corroborating their story with a local hunter who claimed to have seen a similar bipedal creature in the area.


Stories of strange creatures in the woods of North Carolina date back centuries,  no one really knows for sure what hunts the forest waiting for a chance to strike.

The Headless Cabbie.

One night, a mysterious woman stopped the Cabbie asking to help find her lost dog.

She offered the Cabbie a scarf to help keep him warm.

They entered the park, the horses hooves echoing on the old cobble stone path.

As they were going down the road, their surroundings started  getting darker and foggier.
Then the woman heard her dog barking, and told the cabbie to go faster.

The dog ran through a tunnel, There he is, Follow Him! the woman told the cabbie.

They followed the lost dog through the tunnel, and soon after exiting the other side they encountered a crazed man with  a golden hook for an arm,  the large hook lunged out nearly missing the cabbie and his passenger.

However the  man's attack  caused  the Cabbie to var  off the path.

The carrage started moving faster and faster as the horse began to panic.

The woman was becoming frantic even  demonic in her appearance and demeanor .

Her voice getting louder and louder, she ordered the Cabbie to go even faster "We have  to find my doggie" Faster Faster she ordered.

As the carriage speed increased the Cabbie's scarf got caught on a low hanging branch,he had noticed to late.
 
The scarf twisted and snagged around the branch and tightened around  the Cabbie's neck until he was decapitated, thus transforming him into the Headless Cabbie.

This grim scene was followed by the crazed demonic laughter of the woman.

The legend says that on a dark, foggy night in the fall, the Headless Cabbie still haunts the park.

The sound of the demon dog barking is heard; then comes a beating sound on the cobblestones; finally, the evil laugh of the ghostly woman is heard, and she is
seen being driven by the Headless Cabbie in his carriage.

The Beast of Gevaudan, Terrifying Werewolf Encounter.











The Beast of Gevaudan

Sightings  of the beast took place between 1764 - 1767





 La Bestia de Gavaudan is a name given to a large man eating wolf like creature that is said to have terrorized the former province of Gevaudan Now known as department of Lozere and part of Haute - Loire in the Margeride Mountains in south-central France from 1764 to 1767 over an area stretching 56 by 50 miles....

The beasts were consistently described by eyewitnesses as having many large teeth and immense tails. Their fur had a reddish color, The head was  wolf like with darker brown fur, short stright ears, a wide chest with white fur gaping jaws and a thick long tail, the back paws were large and long according to some witnesses, they appeared to be hooves like a horse, well the front paws were shorter covered in long fur and had six claws on them the creature was also  said to have emitted an unbearable odour.  Once when the beast was seen crossing a river, it raised itself up on it's hind legs like a human and waded across, The creature was said to make a sound closer to that of a horse  neighing then a wolf howling, also low growls  like that of a dog scared of in pain...

It was also very strong and fast, sometimes being seen in different locations very far apart on the same day, during hunting it would crawl so low to the groung that it's belly almost touched the dirt.

One Shepard even claimed the beast could stand up on it's hind legs and was strong enough to lift a full grown sheep with it's  arm's.

Another strange fact worth mentioning is that measurements of distance between footprints show that the beasts were able to clear  up to 28 feet  well running on level ground

They killed their victims by tearing at their throats with their teeth. The number of victims differs according to source. De Beaufort (1987) estimated 210 attacks, resulting in 113 deaths and 49 injuries; 98 of the victims killed were partly eaten. An enormous amount of manpower and resources was used in the hunting of the animals, including the army, conscripted civilians, several nobles, and a number of royal huntsmen.


All animals operated outside of ordinary wolf packs, though eyewitness accounts indicate that they sometimes were accompanied by a smaller female, which did not take part in the attacks

The first attack that provided a description of one of the creatures took place on June 1, 1764. A woman from Langogne  saw a large, lupine  animal emerge from the trees and charge directly toward her, but it was driven away by the farm's bulls.


On June 30, the first official victim of the beast was Jeanne Boulet, 14, killed near the village ofLes Hubacs, not far from Langogne.

On September 21, 1765, Antoine killed a large gray wolf measuring 31 inch's high, 5.6 ft long, and weighing  130 lb. The wolf was called Le Loup de Chazes, after the nearby Abbaye des Chazes. It was agreed locally that this was quite large for a wolf. Antoine officially stated: "We declare by the present report signed from our hand, we never saw a big wolf that could be compared to this one. Which is why we estimate this could be the fearsome beast that caused so much damage." The animal was further identified as the culprit by attack survivors, who recognized the scars on the creature's body, inflicted by victims defending themselves

The wolf was stuffed   and sent to Versailles where Antoine was received as a hero, receiving a large sum of money as well as titles and awards.

However, on December 2, 1765, another beast emerged in La Besseyre ain Mary, severely injuring two children. Dozens more deaths are reported to have followed......

The beast also seemed to target people over farm animals, many times it would attack someone while cattle were in the same field.

On January 12, 1765, Jacques Portefaix and seven friends, including two girls, were attacked by the Beast; they drove it away by staying grouped together. Their fight caught the attention of King Louis XV, who awarded 300 livres  to Portefaix, and another 350 livres to be shared among the others. He also directed that Portefaix be educated at the state's expense. The King had taken a personal interest in the attacks, and sent professional wolf-hunters, Jean Charles Marc Antoine Vaumesle d'Enneval and his son Jean-François, to kill the beast. They arrived in Clermont - Ferrand   on February 17, 1765, bringing with them eight bloodhounds which had been trained in wolf-hunting. They spent several months hunting wolves, believing them to be the beast. However, the attacks continued, and by June 1765 they were replaced by François Antoine (also wrongly named Antoine de Beauterne ) the king's  harquwbus bearer and Lieutenant of the Hunt. He arrived in Le Malzieu on June 22.

he killing of the creature that eventually marked the end of the attacks is credited to a local hunter, Jean Chastel, at the  Sogne d' Auvers on June 19, 1767. Later novelists (Chevalley, 1936) introduced the idea that Chastel shot it with a blesses silver bullet of his own manufacture. Upon being opened, the animal's stomach was shown to contain human remains.



Controversy surrounds Chastel's account of his success. Family tradition claimed that, when part of a large hunting party, he sat down to read the Bible  and pray. During one of the prayers the creature came into sight, staring at Chastel, who finished his prayer before shooting the beast. This would have been aberrant behavior for the beast, as it would usually attack on sight. Some believe this is proof Chastel participated with the beast, or that he had even trained it. However, the story of the prayer may simply have been invented out of religious  views of the time.



Various explanations were offered at the time of the attacks as to the beast's identity. Suggestions ranged from exaggerated accounts of wolf attacks, to a werewolf possibly multiple werewolfs, or even a punishment from God.

Jay M. Smith, in his book "Monsters of the Gevaudan" suggests that the deaths attributed to the beast were more likely the work of a number of wolves or packs of wolves.....


Richard H. Thompson, author of Wolf-Hunting in France in the Reign of Louis XV: The Beast of the Gévaudan, contended that there can be satisfactory explanations based on large wolves for all the Beast's depredations.

Another explanation is that the beasts were some type of domestic dog or, a crosse between wild wolves and domestice dog's oon account of their large size and unusual coloration.[2] This speculation has found support from naturalist Michel Louis, author of the book La bête du Gévaudan: L'innocence des loups (English: The Beast of Gevaudan: The innocence of wolves). Louis wrote that Jean Chastel was frequently seen with a large red colored mastiff, which he believes sired the beast. He explains that the beast's resistance to bullets may have been due to it wearing the armoured hide of a young boar, thus also accounting for the unusual colour. He dismisses hyenas as culprits, as the beast itself had 42 teeth, while hyenas have 34.


Some cryptozoologists have suggest that the Beast may in fact have been a surviving remnants of a Mesonychild seeing how some witnesses described it as a huge wolf having hooves rather than paws and it was larger than any normal sized wolf will others still believe it was a hyena.
